Blog 2: Big Driving Day, 900 km, 3 EVs

On June 13th, we drove three EVs (our Kona and Tesla, plus CAA’s Tesla) from St. John’s to Port-aux-Basque, NL, covering over 900km in each car. This was the day we were most concerned about, mostly because we had a deadline to arrive in Port-aux-Basque that evening in order to make it on the overnight ferry. When planning on ABRP, we knew the trip should take 12 hrs and 20 minutes if there were no wait times. However, because we knew at least three EVs would be running the same route, we expected there to be delays.

We did two things to help things work out smoothly. First, we planned for each car to stop at a different station for the first charge after leaving St. John’s that morning, to stagger our stops at future chargers. We also started the day earlier than needed, giving ourselves about 14 hours before needing to be on the ferry. The total journey time was different in each vehicle but ranged from 12 hrs 30 mins to 13 hrs 20 mins. In other words, we had a beautiful drive and made it to the ferry with no unexpected problems!
