Blog 4: Charging Networks in Atlantic Canada

When we leased the Hyundai Electric Kona, we started to look at the local charging networks. In New Brunswick there are two main networks - Flo and e-charge. These two networks, and a few others, collaborate in such a way that an account with one network will allow you to use all the connected networks. This includes Chargepoint and Circuit Electrique.

We were lucky to receive sponsorship from Flo in the form of some free charging, so we started our network journey with Flo! We order physical cards as well to go with the app. We never had problems using our cards to charge in New Brunswick. Occasionally the app would not work alone, due to cell service issues or other.

When we arrived in Newfoundland, we decided to get a Chargepoint account as well. We had a difficult time figuring out how to use the Flo account with the Chargepoint chargers, as we couldn’t simply hold the physical Flo card up to the Chargepoint chargers. Instead, we used the Chargepoint app, and that worked pretty well. There were glitches in charging that seemed related to sometimes charging two cars at once and not using a physical card. Ultimately we realized in order to use the Flo account, there was simply one extra step via the app and we were able to use the Flo account smoothly after that.

I definitely advise getting a physical card for any network you are using!!
